What even is “I can’t even?”

This blog was originally intended as a university assessement piece, but is hopefully going to continue growing.

The name “I can’t even” came from the phrase in common youth vernacular which is often used to show exasperation at some undesirable event or happening. My students (all 8 or 9 years old) use it often in class to show their disgust or disbelief at something.

For example:

Me: “Sorry kids, they ran out of chocolate milk at the Tuckshop. You will have to have strawberry“,

Student response:  “Strawberry! I hate strawberry! I can’t even!!!
